For the past few days in my English class I have been learning about the FNMI through presentations done by my class mates and my self. There were five different topics that were talked about throughout the presentations which were, residential schools, reservations, pow wows and sweat lodges, ministry of Indian affairs, truth and reconciliation. while listening about all these different topics the one that stood out the most was the residential schools because of what happened, how our aboriginal peoples were treated and how just five years ago the government decided that it was time that they reconciled the people of Canada and the aboriginal people that were affected. Just the fact that the reconcile started only five years ago shocks me because the schools started in the early 1900's and only ended in 1996. Throughout those years kids of the ages of three years old and up where taken from their parents, they were three years old I can't even think about that without wanting to cry because when I hear about that I just think about my three year old cousin and how much she looks up too her little brother and how excited she gets when her mom or dad walks in the door when they were only at the grocery store and how the kids that were taken from there parents won't even know what that feels like by the time that those kids get out of the residential schools they won't even remember there parents even there siblings that were taken with them they can't even say a word to there siblings without getting beaten and locked in a cupboard where we would store our pots and pans. some how the people that ran these schools thought that by doing this to these kids that they were helping them become proper adults and helping learn how to take care of them selves and live in the world but through my eyes all they were doing was ruining those kids lives and tearing families apart. That is just half of what shocks me the other half is about the diseases that are spread though the schools, these kids are on top of each other constantly for almost all of there lives if one person gets a cold because the building is now where near being insulated that it is as if they are sleeping outside, that colds are constantly being passed through the schools all winter long and no matter how sick the kids where they would continue going to school in the morning and cleaning and working for the rest of the day if they were throwing up they would be forced to eat the puck. just these few things shocked me and to think that there are so many other shocking facts that I have not even mentioned.
